Dear guest.
Even though paintings and other visual expressions are transnational
and do not need linguistic "translation", I thought you
might wish to know just a litlle bit about me - as a painter, as a
person...
Therefore I offer you this small personal introduction. The rest of
the website is, of course, in Danish, but accompagnied by this small
personal introduction I hope you will nevertheless engage in an exploration
of my art works. The art works are presented in a special section,
called "Vaerker" in Danish.

My name is Gurli Maya.
Since 1997 I have lived on and for my art.
I have always been drawing pictures - especially faces, bodies and symbols
- and I have made poetry ever since the early reenage years.
The first paintings were small oil paintings painted in my grandfather's
existing atelier.
He was a professional art painter and created a space and an environment
of peace, inspiration and immersion - a great personality.

Later on it was watercolors and collage.
In 1983 I went to Art College - but the purpose was just to learn a
little about the different techniques...
I also frequented the Art Academy -
BUT in 1995, during a sabbatical leave, I made the decission to live
on my art.
I rented a place at my sister's artisan workshop and painted large textiles
- on which my first large paintings were to be based on.
|
It was a complex proces with remasol - color and etching, etc. - experimenting
with textile felt tip pens, chalk and other tools, and painting whatever
came to me in a univers of symbols, animal and human figures and texts,
inviting to be seen and manifested.
I have always had a lot of imagination, lots of ideas and spontaneous
whims, that I have been following and that have taken me far and wide
to exiting experiments and results.

For a long time I created countless collages with handmade paper, where
the focus was on the paper itself and my need to work 3-dimensional. Some
of them have been selected for exhibitions in Siena and Rome and have
been published as books.
During another period I was occupied by acrylic paintings with different
kinds of materials found on my many trips abroad. This can be seen in
the Egyptian paintings, for example, containing sand from the pyramids
in Cairo.
|
|
Nowadays the basic structure in my paintings are made of a combination
of my handmade paper, pasta, chalk and ashes. This structure is often
combined with some of my poems or texts insisting to be expressed or
emanating from the theme of the painting. Or with philosophical statements
- and, of course, with my drawings of bodies and animals.
Very often I am occupied by a certain theme - like in 2003/4: With
Body, Soul and Eros, and in 2005/6: The Mozart Paintings,
inspired by the Mozart Sonata.

I have produced
a number of commissions - from wedding collages, personal paintings and
paintings for art calenders, labels for art wine and different forms of
decorations... |
